Not Long Gone...

Posted by
Mooie (Vancouver, Canada) on 8 March 2013 in Landscape & Rural.

Tribute to Stompin' Tom Connors who passed away on Wednesday.... Canadian icon/legend best known for "the good ole hockey game"... a song all Canadians know. The shot is an oldie... taken with an actual camera before I had the iPhone. I'm on my way to the Arctic Circle during solstice... the vast Dempster Highway before me.

Live version of Sudbury Saturday Night... you'll see why he was so loved!

PENTAX Optio M50 1/200 second F/3.5 ISO 64 7 mm

I am not sure how or when, but posting on this blog has become my most accurate platform for creative expression. It's so inspiring to browse through other blogs and every comment is very appreciated!

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Beautiful "see forever" shot, and a fine tribute to Stompin' Tom. I was bummed when I heard the news, which I actually found out whilst watching a Leafs game when they put the hockey tune on and showed him on the big screen during the telecast. A true Canuck patriot, and irreplaceable. Enjoy your trip and the solstice celebrations! I'll be in Kensington Market on the 21st, whooping it up with other like-minded sorts.

8 Mar 2013 1:25pm

@Rick: Even though Stompin' Tom wasn't a regular on my playlist... I still kind of can't believe he's gone. :-( The solstice trip is over, unfortunately... I took it back in 2010. It was amazing... the trip of a lifetime! I'll probably hang in Van this year... we usually play a festival in town. Have a blast in Kensington!

franz from Baden, Austria

wonderful perspective and a leading line that takes us to the horizon and beyond ...
i remember driving the dempster in the summer of 2001 - what a trip this was ;-)

8 Mar 2013 1:32pm

@franz: That's awesome! It's such an incredible feeling... impossible to describe. Glad you enjoyed it :-)

franz from Baden, Austria

i checked out your youtube link as well ... what a great singer and entertainer, and how strange i'd never heard of him before he died!
his "tillsonburg" song brought back (not so) fond memories of when i was working in the tobacco fields there in the 1970s ... ;-)

8 Mar 2013 1:40pm

@franz: Thanks for checking out the link! I'll have to check out the tillsonburg song.. I Haven't heard of it before. Mind you, he does have quite the anthology. Rock on!

8 Mar 2013 6:39pm

@Ruthiebear: Thanks a lot.... the yukon is SO VAST.... no picture I have seen truly does it justice!

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

A wonderful perspective in this photo and a fine tribute. I could only understand part of what he sang but I wanted to start stompin'.

8 Mar 2013 8:20pm

@Steve Rice: Haha.. thanks for checking out the link... part of Stompin' Tom's charm, I think :-)

Abena from Illinois, United States

That's a brilliant tribute for him, I checked the hockey song and it is a pretty fun tune. I guess, he had presence. And you must enjoy the solstice, that dirt road sure doesn't look smooth :) I love the trees, the horizon, the way it just pulls me in and the overall peaceful feel.

8 Mar 2013 11:12pm

@Abena: Cool, thanks for checking out the hockey song... it's kind of his signature song :-) That solstice was the most memorable one I've experienced... can't describe a day that literally never ends. It was wild!
