Blast From the Past

Posted by
Mooie (Vancouver, Canada) on 15 October 2012 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

54-40 at the Commodore Ballroom :-)

You know that little ditty Hootie and the Blowfish sang on Friends.... yeah, this is the band that wrote that song!

With Grapes of Wrath opening for them, the whole experience was a bit of a time warp. Both bands rocked the crap out of the joint and reminded us all why we make a point of seeing them when they play!

This is the song that put them on the map (commercially) here in the Great White North some 25 years ago

I am not sure how or when, but posting on this blog has become my most accurate platform for creative expression. It's so inspiring to browse through other blogs and every comment is very appreciated!

One day in your life you feel
Something in you
One day in your life your
Heart will free your fear
Because it's one day that
You might never be around here
And I'll never ever see you alive

Go back
There's nothing you can do about that
Go back
The only one talking talks back
Go back
Inside, you must serve inside

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

I love the mood of this high contrast grainy image, it carries the energy and excitement. Cannot say I've heard of the band but they sound very reminiscent of Joy Division and New Order.

15 Oct 2012 9:05am

@Curly: Yeah, they didn't make a lot of waves outside of Canada... but yeah they do share a similar vibe with Joy Division for sure :-)

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

haha-the subltle differences in the fans...I got to mostly Metal concerts, so I'm used to seeing "Horns" \m/ , here we have a subtle difference! You caught the atmosphere of a live gig brilliantly

15 Oct 2012 1:15pm

@CElliottUK: So... you're saying there are not a lot of rabbit ear gestures from the crowds you hang with? Vancouver venues are probably pretty famous for being relatively 420 friendly.... it's a peaceful mood what can I say? :-) Rock on and thanks for the post!

Mhelene from Villiers-sur-Marne, France

Great atmosphere !

15 Oct 2012 1:52pm

@Mhelene: Thanks a lot!

15 Oct 2012 2:36pm

@Basile Pesso: I like the singer in the background with his arms to the sky :-)

@Basile Pesso: I know :-)

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Excellent "in the thick of it" vibes, Mooie ! The gritty raucous black and white is great for this shot, too, and I like the post for its Canuck band history element.

15 Oct 2012 3:08pm

@Rick: It was the first concert I'd been to at the Commodore in quite some time... I need to not go so long without I live music fix! I was in the thick of it... but I get closer later :-)

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

Yep, what you call "Rabbit ears" I call "Horns"..(They are supposed to look like the devil's horns)

16 Oct 2012 6:54am

@CElliottUK: Haha...I guess "Horns" sound a little more rock and roll than "ears"....

Abena from Maseru, Lesotho

I love this one ! Especially the man holding the bottle up I also like they all have their hands in the air. Excellent grain and b&w image :)

18 Oct 2012 3:02pm

@Abena: Thanks! I kept changing my mind from color to black and white and back to color again for this shot. Glad you liked the end result. Also... what's not to love about a guy waving a bottle of beer :-)
