The Meeting

Posted by
Mooie (Vancouver, Canada) on 24 September 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I was annoyed at this stranger when I took this photo... but now he has become the focus of it and I am annoyed that I didn't have the light to show his whole posture. This day changed my view on many things. For example, I hadn't thought that this person could be gazing at my side of the water just as wistfully as I gaze from it towards where he is standing.

I am not sure how or when, but posting on this blog has become my most accurate platform for creative expression. It's so inspiring to browse through other blogs and every comment is very appreciated!

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

A beautiful image and I agree he has brought something extra to your superb composition. I used to stand there and wait for people to get out of the way now I usually shoot a couple of shots before they move.

24 Sep 2012 6:27am

@Doug: Ha thanks for the comment! I don't generally have the patience to wait for them to move :-)

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Sometimes it is important to include the human interest, it heightens the emotional pull of a scene, as well as providing scale.

24 Sep 2012 8:42am

@Curly: Very true, and now that I know that I feel kind of bad for the couple of seconds I spent passing negative vibes on this innocent stranger who in the end.... kind of made the image work. Bad Mooie!

24 Sep 2012 9:28am

@Anna.C: Thanks a lot Anna! This man had a suitcase with him, but more than wonder where he was off to I wondered what he was gazing at.... really the industrial area below but amazing views on either side. Hunh.

Yes, the figure in the frame creates a sense of contemplation that we share in viewing the image.

@gerard1948: Thanks a lot, glad you like :-)

Rick from Toronto, Canada

It's a great shot with plenty of mood, and having him there sort of places us in his shoes for the same view. I really like the shift from brilliant sun to rich foreground shadow, too.

24 Sep 2012 3:09pm

@Rick: Thanks a lot! Glad you were alright with the foreground shadow.... I processed a copy of the photo a little brighter and showing the guys position because I thought it added something... but I couldn't make it work. Trying to explain that the shadow bugged me :-)

Mooie from Vancouver, Canada

Ha, okay so you don't like the photo?
Interesting insight... you don't like perfection, but you see it?

25 Sep 2012 1:50pm

Basile Pesso from Barcelona, Spain

I hadn't seen your answer.
I just said that "perfection" was a way of talking, we never know what's real perfection.
Of course I love it, hence my comment and remix.
